Week1 Post1 First Impressions

1.       What areas of law are practised in the law firm you are working at? Do they have a mission statement? If so, what is it?

Jennifer Roggemann Law Office practices the immigration law. Their mission statement is "Serve my clients wholeheartedly as if I were serving the Lord. (Eph 6:7)".

2.       Provide details of the orientation you have received. How were you introduced to other staff members? Are you working with one or many staff members?

The office manager provided the organizational tree of staff members and informed me about what I should learn. She introduced me as an intern, and they welcomed me. I am working with two staff members. The office manager has been teaching me about overall documentation for immigration files, and the receptionist has been teaching me how to prepare new client files, how to deal with retainer, how to complete letters, PC law, and so on.

3.      Were you provided with a manual of office procedures?  If so, what type of information was in it?  Is there a particular way to format documents?  If not, how will you keep track of all the details of the job?

My first job is to close files. The office manager showed me what to shred, what is original documents which must be sent to clients, and what should be kept into files. I took notes about what I have learned and she checked them to make sure that I have learned correctly.

4.      Has anything surprised you about the office or what you are doing?

Most of them have been working with Jennifer over 10 years. Besides, they prepare lunch at the office kitchen in turn. I feel like they are a family. I am happy to help them prepare lunch, and they enjoy preparing lunch with me.

5.      Provide details of your observations of the office environment and things that made an impression on you [positive or negative]

The majority of the people in this law office are immigrants, so they understand my struggles very well.
